The Medical Technologist obtains lab specimens and performs lab tests as ordered in an appropriate manner. Responsibilities
Performs and reports chemistry, hematology, blood bank, coagulation and urine tests according to departmental policy and procedure.
Takes responsibility in the absence of Manager or Supervisor.
Prepares specimens and fills out forms for reference lab work.
Assures integrity of specimens.
Possesses the ability to perform tests accurately within an established timeframe.
Performs clerical functions on the computer.
Orders supplies specific to assigned area.
Participates in departmental staff meetings.
Precepts new employees as needed.
Is responsible for Quality Assurance as assigned.
Follows Universal Precautions.
Follows all lab policies and procedures.
Adheres to Administrative Policies and procedures.
Adheres to all principles of laboratory safety.
Possesses an awareness of the patient population taking into account the special needs and behaviors of all age groups to include; geriatric, adult, adolescent and pediatric.
Demonstrates concern and a desire to be helpful and supportive to patients, families, physicians and all members of our health care team.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
Associates Degree in MLT or a BS in Medical Technology or related sciences is required/ Must meet CLIA88 requirement for high complexity personnel
Minimum Work
Experience:
A minimum of one year of experience in a lab as a med tech. Min of One to Three years generalist experience-Chem/Heme/Transfusion experience preferred. Will consider a new graduate.
Required licenses/certifications:
Certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or Nat'l Clinical Lab Specialist (NCLS) certification (or eligible) is required.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Must be familiar with the proper performance of laboratory procedures, Knowledge of FDA, CAP, State and CLIA Regulations, Lab Environment, Clinical Lab Testing, Chemistry Techniques, Equipment maintenance, medical terminology. Skills include organization, attention to details, computer skills, Excellent communication skills are required.
Ability to work well in a team and respond quickly to emergent and non-emergent requests.
